Cornish patients to lead way in UK's largest Telehealth trial
It is routine these days for hospital patients to have their condition monitored electronically
but now telehealth technology is available to provide similar reassurance at home. From
April, 2008 people who live in Cornwall and who have one or more of the following long term
conditions of diabetes, congestive heart failure (CHF) or chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD) will have the opportunity to try out telehealth services.

HOME TELEHEALTH LIMITED (HTL) HAS RECENTLY LAUNCHED ITS TELEHEALTH CARE CENTRE IN BELFAST.
The Care Centre part of its enhanced Telehealth service is being delivered and managed by the staff of Quality Healthcare At Home (QHAH), which ceased delivering service in February.
“Our experience
with WebVMC has been wonderful. Our patients love the
monitoring system because of the ease of use and
interactiveness. The nurses have been able to easily
integrate the system into their plan of care and the
versatility of the product works for them instead of
becoming more work for them. The customer service has been
an integral part of our success with the monitors.”

Telehealth
Becomes Virtual Disease Management:
Healthcare on the Web Comes to Home Care
RemoteNurse™ is the first software-based
system to provide true remote disease management, allowing
you to take advantage of the Internet for anytime, anywhere
monitoring. Much more than a device to measure vital signs
in the home, RemoteNurse™ is your virtual disease management
specialist.
Newham University Hospital NHS Trust has officially launched
a telemedicine service that allows patients to self-monitor
their conditions from their homes.
The Service Transformation Redesign and Innovation Project
(STRIP) consists of a touch-screen connected to a web server
on the NHS site, and allows staff to monitor the vital signs
of a patient remotely. The statistics are sent to the Newham
Response Centre, and should any abnormalities occur they can
be acted upon.
Penelope Haile, director of emergency and elective care at
Newham, said: "By working closely with our clients we will
be able to provide them with the assistance they need to
help them achieve a better quality of life in the
community." The service is aimed at those with chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic heart disease.
The technology was developed and implemented by Home
Telehealth Limited and AMD Telemedicine, and launched in
partnership with Newham Assistive Electronic Technology,
Newham Network and the North East London Strategic Health
Authority.
Wales
is looking to become a leader in new technology which would
allow patients to be treated at home rather than in
hospital.
"Telehealth" uses
developments in communications to send patients' information
to their doctors via a phone line.
The Welsh Assembly
Government is launching its strategy at the National
Telehealth conference in Cardiff later. It estimates stays in
hospital could be reduced by two-thirds in some cases.
Patients with heart
conditions, for example, would be given a machine which
measures vital signs such as heart rate, weight and blood
pressure. The information would
then be sent down a telephone line, automatically alerting a
doctor or nurse at the other end if there was a problem.
Howard Lucas, who
suffers from high blood pressure, is the sort of patient who
could benefit from the technology in the future.
The machine asks a series of health-related
questions
After testing the system, Mr Lucas said: "The simplicity is
the first appealing part of it."
"The fact that you can
have it here at your bedside or in the table in the home as
opposed to having to trail off to the day centre or the
clinic or the doctor's surgery.
"I'm on medication for
high blood pressure. The system tests you for your blood
pressure which gives you peace of mind.
"It also does a weight
check," he added.
I know of three or four companies who are
looking to come to Wales immediately because
of projects that are imminent
Peter Range
The savings to the
health service in using systems such as this are potentially
enormous. People with heart
conditions, for example, could cut the amount of time they
spend in hospital by two-thirds. Peter Range is helping
to launch the assembly government's telehealth strategy. He believes a change
in the way different services work is needed. He said at present
health professionals tended to work separately from those in
social services who look after people in the community - the
key is to bring them together, he said. Wales is already
leading the way in the field, according to Mr Range.
"I know of three or
four companies who are looking to come to Wales immediately
because of projects that are imminent - Wales seems to be
ahead of the pack."
